FIBA endorses Govindraj as the President of Basketball Federation of India

International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has declared K Govindraj as president of the Basketball Federation of India (BFI). A rival group led by former BFI CEO Roopam Sharma had conducted their own elections and had elected Poonam Mahajan as the president on March end. FIBA secretary-general Patrick Baumann said that the international basketball body had reviewed documents from both groups and amde decision on the basis of BFI Constitution and election guidelines issued by the Government of India.
Baumann also requested the Indian Olympic Association to abide by the present decision. A copy of FIBA’s decision was also sent to Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Sarbananda Sonowal, FIBA president Horacio Muratore and FIBA Asia president Sheikh Saud Bin Ali Al-Thani among other key FIBA officials.
