Kamal Hassan and Gautam Ghosh added in Shyam Benegal committee

Actor Kamal Hassan and director Gautam Ghosh has been included in the Shyam Benegal committee. The committee has been recently set by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcast to look into the functioning of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

 About the Committee 

  • The Ministry of Information and Broadcast formed Shyam Benegal committee on January 1, 2016 to take a look at the functioning of the Central Board of Film Certification.
  • The committee was formed to specifically provide a holistic framework and enable the members of CBFC to discharge their responsibilities keeping in view this framework.

 Responsibilities of the Committee 

  • Making note of best practices in other parts of the world in regard with their film industries
  • Recommending guidelines or procedures under the provisions of the Cinematograph Act for the benefit of the Screening Committee
  • Oversee the staffing pattern of CBFC in order to recommend a framework which can help in introducing further transparency in the process of film certification
 Time Limit 
  • The Committee has been asked to submit their recommendations in this regard within two months.
 CBFC 
  • The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) also known as the Censor Board is a statutory body under the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.
  • It is responsible for regulating the public exhibition of films in India under Cinematograph Act 1952.
  • Films can be released in India only after they are certified by the Central Board of Film Certification.
