St. Xaviers college will be headed by non-jesuit, Menezes, for the first time

In its 146-year history, Mumbai’s St Xavier’s College will be headed by a non-priest, named , Agnelo Menezes. The college since its foundation in 1869, has always had a Jesuit priest as principal.

Menezes will succeed Fr Frazer Mascarenhas, who served as principal for 12 years. It was during his tenure that Xavier’s became Mumbai’s first autonomous college for arts and science.

About Agnelo Menezes

  1.  Menezes is son of a clerk who was  a carpenter at St Paul’s Church in Dadar.
  2. Menezes born and braught up in the chawls of Parel in central Mumbai.
  3. Menezes is a student at St Xavier’s.
  4. He credits poet and writer Eunice de Souza, a former teacher at the college, for having helped him develop self-confidence as a student.
  5. After graduating from the college, he worked as a teacher in the Institution.
  6. After five years, he took a break and joined the Jesuit order.
  7. He spent 19 years as an economics professor in Dr T K Tope Night College for underprivileged students.
