1. Tunisia declares state of emergency after bus blast
Tunisia’s president has declared a state of emergency throughout the country and a curfew in the capital after an attack on a bus carrying his presidential guard killed at least 12 people. Beji Caid Essebsi, who was not on the bus when it was hit by an explosion in the centre of Tunis, said in a televised address the country was at war against terrorism and called for international cooperation against extremists who have staged attacks across the world in recent weeks.

2. Noted litterateur Surendra Upadhyay passes away
Noted litterateur and former chairman of Rajasthan Brijbhasha Academy, Professor Surendra Upadhyay died due to cardiac arrest. Upadhyay had served as chairman of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee Intellectual Cell. He has authored at least three dozens of books, mainly short fiction, critic and poetry. Upadhyay was the recipient of Doctor of Literature (DLit) at the university of Rajasthan where he was head of the department.

3. UN launches campaign violence against women
India’s iconic India Gate and the Delhi Metro will join hundreds of monuments across the world that will be illuminated as part of a UN effort to galvanize support for global action to end violence against women and girls. India Gate will be illuminated in orange and messages of ending violence against women will be displayed on panel boards in two high-traffic lines of the Delhi Metro as part of the UN’s ‘Orange the World’ campaign that includes parades, soccer matches, school debates and the lighting up of hundreds of iconic monuments.

4. Nuclear-capable Dhanush missile successfully test fired
The Navy has successfully test-fired nuclear-capable surface-to surface ballistic missile ‘Dhanush’ in full operational configuration from a naval warship off the Odisha coast. The trial was conducted from an undisclosed location, nearly 45 km from Puri and Paradip coast. The test was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Navy. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) had conducted a developmental trial of home grown interceptor missile Aswin Air Defence (AAD) from Abdul Kalam Island in Bhadrak district.

5. Japan successfully launches its first commercial satellite
A Japanese rocket lifted off and successfully put the national space programme’s first commercial satellite into orbit, as Tokyo tries to enter a business dominated by European and Russian companies. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries oversaw the launch from Tanegashima Space Center in southwest Japan. The launch of the H-IIA rocket was delayed by roughly 30 minutes because a small ship unexpectedly came near the space station.

6. SEBI, Bangladesh SEC ink MoU on bilateral cooperation
Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) have signed an MoU on bilateral cooperation and technical assistance. The MoU seeks to promote further development of economic links and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. It also aims at enhancing investor protection and creating conditions for effective development of securities markets in both countries. The MoU was signed by SEBI chairman U K Sinha and BSEC Chairman M Khairul Hossain in the presence of Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina Wazed.

7. China building world’s largest animal cloning factory
China is building the world’s biggest animal cloning factory where it will recreate sniffer dogs, pets, racehorses and beef cattle. Chinese scientists had signed a deal to create a commercial animal cloning centre in Tianjin, northeastern China. The factory will be built in the Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Area (TEDA), a business development park sponsored by the government. Construction of the main building has already begun and scientists will start working there in the first half of 2016.
