INS Viraat, world’s oldest active aircraft carrier, in Kochi
The oldest operational aircraft carrier in the world, INS Viraat of Indian Navy may decommissioned next year in 2016 in Kochi. The ship started its Journey in 1958. One of the crew member said for the last 28 years,” the ship had been periodically upgraded with all its weapons and censors with equipment on board and “that is how the Navy has been able to keep it running so effectively.”

France announces first air strikes on Islamic State in Syria
France announced its first air strikes against the Islamic State group in Syria on 26th September 2015. France cited legitimate defence as its rationale for planning the strikes, while ruling out ground operations.
A statement called for a “comprehensive response (to the) Syrian chaos”, saying: “Civilian populations must be protected against all forms of violence, that of Daesh (ISIS) and other terrorist groups, but also against the murderous bombings of (Syrian President) Bashar al-Assad.

WHO takes Nigeria off global list of polio-endemic countries – Africa
The WHO took Nigeria off the list of polio-endemic countries, hailing a “historic achievement” more than a year after the last recorded case of the disease in Africa’s most populous nation. The announcement, made in a statement and at a meeting of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in New York, leaves just two countries — Pakistan and Afghanistan — on the list.

Cueist Pankaj Advani pockets 14th World title
Panjak Advani, India’s most successful cueist, has added another feather to his cap by winning the IBSF World Billiards Championship held in Adelaide, Australia. He outplayed his opponent in the final to take his world title count to 14. Advani, 30, defeated Singapore’s Peter Gilchrist by 1168 points. Bengaluru’s ‘Golden Boy’ was in roaring form and appeared keen to not only defend his Time format world title but also avenge his loss of the Point format championship to Gilchrist, which happened recently.

Lewis Hamilton overtakes Nico Rosberg to win in Japan
Lewis Hamilton regained his total dominance of Formula One with his eighth victory of the season. Mercedes returned to the front of Formula 1 as Lewis Hamilton dominated the Japanese Grand Prix to put a stranglehold on the title race. Pole-sitter Rosberg was forced off the track and out of the title race via a slight push at turn two from Hamilton, who dominated this Japanese Grand Prix from start to finish. Sebastian Vettel, shock winner in Singapore, took third with Kimi Raikkonen fourth in the second Ferrari. They were followed by Bottas (Williams) and Nico Hulkenberg (Force India).

New India Assurance (NIA) to expand business to Asia, Africa, North America
New India Assurance (NIA), the largest non-life insurer in the country, has charted out its global expansion plans that include areas like Asia, North America and Africa. NIA is already present in countries like Mauritius and Nigeria. It has an associate company in Kenya which operates in Kenya and Tanzania as well.

Noted environmentalist Kallen Pokkudan passes away at 78
Noted environmentalist Kallen Pokkudan, who played a crucial role in planting mangroves in various parts of Kerala, has died at the age of 78 due to age-related ailments. He was undergoing treatment at Cherukunnu Mission hospital for the past few days. He had been involved in planting mangroves in different parts of the state since 1989 and had been motivating others in the same direction.

Manipur Governor Syed Ahmed passes away in Mumbai
Manipur Governor Syed Ahmed has passed away in Mumbai at the age of 73 due to cancer. He was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in suburban Bandra. He was sworn in as the Governor of Manipur on May 16, 2015. Ahmed, a former Congress leader from Maharashtra, was shifted to the north-eastern State from Jharkhand, where he was appointed Governor on August 26, 2011 when the UPA Government was in power at the Centre.

NALCO to invest over Rs 65,000 cr for new projects
Aluminium giant NALCO is all set to invest over Rs 65,000 crore to launch ambitious projects in the country and abroad. The company is exploring countries like Oman, Iran and Indonesia to set up the proposed smelter plant with an estimated investment of Rs 20,000 crore. The main reasons are power is cheap in Oman and Iran. Abundant coal is available at low cost in Indonesia. NALCO is now hopeful of Odisha government’s consent for allocation of Pottangi bauxite Mines in Koraput district.
