  1. Borje Ekholm appointed as President and CEO of Ericsson

Swedish telecom gear maker Ericssont its board of directors has appointed Borje Ekholm as President and CEO, effective January 16, 2017. Ekholm joins Ericsson from his current position as CEO of PatriciaIndustries, a division within Investor. His appointment comes almost three months after the company ousted global CEO Hans Vestberg.

2. Doordarshan DG Supriya Sahu appointed as new Vice President of ABU

Doordarshan DG Supriya Sahu has been appointed as the new Vice President of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union.  The public broadcaster said that it participated in the 53rd annual Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union General Assembly, hosted by the Indonesian public broadcaster RRI, which concluded in Bali, Indonesia on 25th October.

3. Karnal Singh appointed as Director of Enforcement Directorate

Senior IPS officer Karnal Singh was appointed chief of Enforcement Directorate, the agency entrusted with probing money laundering cases. The appointments committee of cabinet has approved the appointment of Singh as director, Enforcement Directorate (ED) till August 31, 2017.Singh, a 1984 batch IPS officer of Union territories cadre, is holding the additional charge of ED chief since August last year. He is at present special director in the ED.

4. Dr. Ajay M. Gondane appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to Australia

India named Ajay M. Gondane as the next High Commissioner to Australia. He is from Indian Foreign Service Batch 1985 and is expected to take up the assignment shortly. Dr Gondane’s appointment was announced days after the current High Commissioner His Excellency Mr. Navdeep Suri was appointed as Indian Ambassador to UAE.

5. Federer most valuable athlete brand of 2016: Forbes

Roger Federer has been named the top athlete brand in the Forbes Fab 40, the world’s most valuable sports brands. The Swiss superstar has a brand value of $37 million a year, the amount by which endorsement income exceeds the average endorsement income earned by the Top 10 earning athletes in the same sport during the past year.

6. Antoine Griezmann named La Liga Player of the Year

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has been named La Ligaplayer of the season for 2015/16, ahead of the likes of star duo Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Atletico’s Diego Simeone also took the coach of the season award while Barcelona’s Uruguay striker Luis Suarez was named the top non-EU player.

Atletico dominated the awards as Jan Oblak was the best goalkeeper, Diego Godin top defender and Frenchman Griezmann also claimed the fans’ award. Real Madrid weren’t left empty-handed, though, as Luka Modric was named best midfielder.

7. Bullet train corridor construction to begin in 2017

Moving swiftly to ensure faster train travel, Indian Railways is all set to begin construction work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor next year. Railway board member (traffic) Mohammed Jamshed said that the work for this bullet train corridor will start by next year. The Mumbai to Ahmedabad high-speed corridor will be built with the assistance of Japan. The corridor will be based on the Japanese Shinkansen high-speed technology.

8. OCARE launches India’s first dental insurance product

Mumbia-based independent Insurance Process as a Service (IPAAS) platform, OCARE has launched the first ever dental insurance product in the country. A group insurance product aims to make dental treatments accessible, affordable and achievable for the end-users. With its nationwide effort, OCARE will offer group dental insurance to villages through gram panchayats of the country.

9. HPE ties up with Intel to launch Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) India joined hands with Intel to launch a Centre of Excellence (CoE) that would help demonstrate High Performance Computing (HPC) as a service for customers. The centre will also enable research institutions and academia to test their applications on the latest HPC platform innovations, enabled by Intel technologies, and accelerates HPC adoption in India.

10. Jaipur Literature Festival to be held between January 19- 23

Hailed as a confluence of ideas, thoughts and literature, the Jaipur Literature Festival has announced the dates for its upcoming edition. To be held from January 19 to 23, 2017 this will be the festival’s 10th edition. Having hosted a string of illustrous public figures like Margaret Atwood, Mohammed Hanif, Oprah Winfrey, OrhanPamuk, Pico Iyer, Salman Rushdie, Stephen Fry, Thomas Piketty, Vikram Seth among many others, this year’s edition promises to be nothing different.

11. Bengaluru, Delhi get ATMs that dispense gold coins

A unique automatic telling machine (ATM) has grabbed the attention of people in Bengaluru, as instead of dispensing money, it accepts money from users and dispenses gold coins in exchange. This one of its kind experiment has been initiated by online jewellery company Blue Stone on the occasion of Diwali. The mechanism behind its usage is quite simple and a frequent ATM user can operate it without any hassle.

12. Gambia withdraws from ICC over ‘humiliation’ of Africans

Gambia has announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court, accusing the Hague-based tribunal of “persecution and humiliation of people of colour, especially Africans”. Announcement comes after similar decisions earlier this month by South Africa and Burundi to abandon the institution, set up to try the world’s worst crimes.

13. MMTC ties up with banks to sell Indian Gold Coin

 Public sector major MMTC has joined hands with HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Andhra Bank to retail gold coins with a new buyback option. Besides its own outlets across the country, MMTC has tied up with Indian Overseas Bank, Vijaya Bank, Federal Bank and YES Bank to sell gold coins in denominations of 5 gm and 10 gm coin and 20 gm bar.

14. IBM acquires Bengaluru-based Sanovi for an undisclosed sum

American technology giant, IBM has acquired home-grown Sanovi Technologies to bolster its cloud offerings for an undisclosed sum. Bangalore based Sanovi provides hybrid cloud recovery, cloud migration and business continuity software for enterprise data centersand cloud infrastructure.

15. Disarmament Week observed 24th – 30th October

The annual observance of Disarmament Week on October 24-30, which begins on the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, was called for in the Final Document of the General Assembly 1978 special session on disarmament (resolution S-10/2). States were invited to highlight the danger of the arms race, propagate the need for its cessation and increase public understanding of the urgent tasks of disarmament.

16. 69th Infantry Day being observed

October 27 is celebrated as Infantry Day by the Indian Army as it was on this day in 1947 that an infantry company of the 1st Battalion of the Sikh Regiment was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar to liberate Kashmir from the invading tribal irregulars who were supported by the Pakistan army.

17. 27 October: World Day for Audiovisual Heritage

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) works with organizations, governments and communities promote the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on October 27 each year. This year 2016 Theme: “It’s Your Story – Don’t Lose It”

18. Angelique Kerber receives WTA Year-End World No. 1 awar

Germany’s Angelique Kerber started her morning in Singapore by defeating Simona Halep, 6-4, 6-2. Kerber is now 2-0 in the Red Group at the WTA Finals in Singapore, putting her in a good spot to advance to the semifinal stage for the first time in her career. There was also the small matter of being awarded the WTA Year-End World No. 1 Award as well.
